cardiology aug24What is Cardiology?

Cardiology is the branch of veterinary medicine that focuses on the study, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases and disorders of the heart. It involves understanding the structure and function of the heart and its associated blood vessels. Cardiology specialists have extensive knowledge and expertise in identifying and managing various cardiac conditions, ensuring the best possible outcomes for your pet.

What is a Cardiology Specialist?

João Loureiro heads the cardiology department at London Vet Specialists and is currently the only cardiology specialist operating in central London. In close collaboration with the London Vet Specialist referral team, the cardiology service will investigate, diagnose and treat all forms of cardiac disease, providing a bespoke investigation and treatment plan for each patient to deliver excellence in patient and client care..

Cardiology Problems in Dogs and Cats

We know that the possibility of a heart condition is concerning, and the first step is a thorough evaluation to achieve the correct diagnosis. Investigations will often start with an echocardiogram (heart scan) and may also include an electrocardiogram (ECG), blood pressure measurement and thoracic radiographs (chest X-rays) when appropriate.

Please allow 2 to 3 hours for the whole process of cardiac disease investigation. The initial consultation will usually last 30 to 45 minutes, during which we will take a thorough history and examine your pet. A plan for further investigations will be formulated and we will always discuss potential costs, outcomes and potential risks. Your pet will usually need to stay with us for just a few hours, but sometimes overnight hospitalisation for further investigation and treatment may be recommended.

Cardiology Treatment and Procedures

Most patients are investigated without sedation (our team ensures the safety and comfort of your pet during all procedures). Despite this, travelling to a veterinary hospital can be stressful. Medications such as Trazadone for dogs and Gabapentin for cats can alleviate some of the stress. Please discuss these options with our primary veterinary care team and we are always available to offer further support.

We treat cats and dogs for a range of heart conditions and related issues:

  • Heart murmurs
  • Breathing problems
  • Collapsing episodes
  • Exercise intolerance
  • Heart failure
  • Abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias)
  • Congenital heart conditions such as patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) and pulmonic stenosis
  • Diseases involving the heart sac (pericardium)

The advanced equipment and technology at London Vet Specialists are fundamental in ensuring precise diagnosis and effective treatment of cardiac conditions, enhancing the well-being of our patients.

At London Vet Specialists, we provide veterinary professionals with unparalleled cardiology services, supported by advanced diagnostic investigations, a highly skilled cardiology team, and state-of-the-art equipment, all aimed at ensuring the well-being of your pet.
