Dr Giacomo Riggio graduated in 2014 from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Perugia with a thesis on the relationship between dogs and handlers during avalanche search-and-rescue operations. Shortly after graduation, he completed an internship in behavioural medicine in Davis, California, under the supervision of Dr Sophia Yin. In 2017, he earned an MSc in Biodiversity, Wildlife and Ecosystem Health from the University of Edinburgh, with a dissertation on the relationship between welfare and conservation education for captive wolves.

In 2018, he obtained an MSc in Veterinary Clinical Ethology from the University of Pisa, focusing his dissertation on sensory stimulation in shelter dogs. In 2023, he was awarded a PhD in Veterinary Science for a project investigating the endocrine and clinical-ethological correlates of dog attachment styles towards their owners. In 2024, he spent six months in Uganda coordinating research activities within a One Health humanitarian project conducted by the University of Perugia in collaboration with Italian NGOs, aimed at improving the welfare of farm animals and rural communities in the Karamoja region.

Since 2025, he has been a Diplomate of the European College of Animal Welfare and Behavioural Medicine (BM). He is the author or co-author of several papers in peer-reviewed international journals and a speaker at national and international conferences. Dr Riggio lectures in the Master’s programme in Veterinary Clinical Ethology and in the course on Animal Breeding Techniques and Dog Training at the University of Pisa, where he teaches dog training. Since 2018 he has been working as a freelance veterinary behaviourist for dogs and cats in Italy and abroad.
